André Collot was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator whose career spanned several decades. At first glance, his work might not immediately suggest a strong connection to BDSM or fetish themes. However, his illustrations for the infamous 1931/1936 edition of the Marquis de Sade’s Les 120 Journées de Sodome (The 120 Days of Sodom) firmly place him within the realm of extreme erotic art.
Commissioned as a separate suite of lithographs (often dated around 1931–1936), Collot’s images vividly capture the novel’s libertine excesses, including scenes of domination, sadism, and ritualistic depravity. Elements that resonate strongly with modern BDSM sensibilities.
Beyond this landmark work, Collot produced other erotic illustrations that explore fetishistic motifs such as strap-on play and enemas, often rendered with a subtle yet provocative elegance typical of interwar French libertine art.
