Pierre Klossowski
~ 1905 – 2001
Pierre Klossowski was a French writer and artist whose Mannerist-inspired art explored homoerotism and sadomasochistic imagery. Though less well-known than his older brother Balthus, Klossowski has been the subject of a renewed critical interest following a 2015 retrospective exhibition at Gladstone Gallery in New York. Recalling the Surrealist eroticism of Hans Bellmer, his work often featured young men engaged in ritualistically violent sex acts rendered in a loose, smooth drawing style.
Klossowski wrote full length volumes on the Marquis de Sade and Friedrich Nietzsche, a number of essays on literary and philosophical figures, and five novels.
