Vala Moro was an Austro‑Hungarian dancer and graphic artist who flourished in Vienna during the intoxicating 1920s and 1930s. Born in 1907, she appeared on prestigious stages such as the Wiener Konzerthaus, where she performed intimate dance‑dramas, including a version of The Burning Girl set to Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony.

Living a double life as both performer and creator, Moro produced a series of sensual prints that captured the essence of motion and desire, often tinged with an erotic edge that pushed the limits of Art Deco.
Her work, mainly vibrant etchings and drypoints, embodies the decadent spirit of the interwar years: gracefully arched bodies in tango and waltz, nude figures locked in intimate embraces, and subtle hints of homoerotic themes.

Moro’s most iconic contribution is the portfolio Tanz (1924), issued by Artur Wolf Verlag in a limited run of just 350 copies. The suite of ten prints celebrates the sensuality of the dance floor with fluid lines and vivid colours, while weaving in bondage‑like poses and femdom elements in a playful, seductive aesthetic. Her etchings, hand‑signed and often monogrammed, even reached the United States, finding their way into private collections such as that of Countess Katharina Wolf at Palais Coburg.

Despite her prolific output, Moro remains an enigmatic figure; she disappears from the archives around the 1940s, possibly under a pseudonym. Her prints, which now fetch auction prices ranging from €100 to €1 000, embody the forbidden allure of vintage fetish art, a dance on the edge of ecstasy and restraint.
