~ 1857 - 1926
Adolphe Léon Willette was a French painter, illustrator, caricaturist and lithographer who became one of the leading figures of the Belle Époque. Born in Châlons-sur-Marne, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and quickly made a name for himself with his elegant, often satirical drawings for magazines, posters and books.
Willette had a sharp eye for the decadent side of Parisian life. His work frequently mixed humour, sensuality and a touch of mischief, with stylish women, bohemian scenes and playful power games. In many of his illustrations you can clearly spot early BDSM undertones: dominant ladies, submissive men, flagellation scenes, spanking motifs and teasing games of control and surrender. These elements appear both in his more erotic pieces and in his lighter, satirical drawings, long before such themes had a name in popular culture.
A notable highlight in his erotic output is the portfolio Les péchés capitaux (The Capital Sins), created over an eleven-year period between 1906 and 1917 and published in its complete form in 1917. This set, apparently the only complete portfolio of erotic prints Willette ever produced, brings the seven deadly sins to life in lively, detailed lithographs. Lust, gluttony and avarice stand out particularly for their imagination and humour, while the whole series showcases his skill at blending sensuality with witty observation.
