Bisare
6 albums/24 artworks – Bisare is an extremely obscure American underground publication issued in Chicago in the early to mid-1940s. Produced by the shadowy imprint Press Esquire, it appeared as a numbered series of small digests, each containing a fresh set of illustrations devoted exclusively to the themes of flagellation, chaining, bondage and spanking. Unlike the better-known later titles that would follow, Bisare belongs to the pre-Bizarre era of American fetish publishing. John Willie’s famous Bizarre magazine only began in 1946; Bisare predates it (or at best runs parallel in its earliest years) and represents one of the little-documented Chicago contributions to the clandestine “curiosa” market of the period.
