3 albums/19 artworks – Toyen (born Marie Čermínová, 1902–1980) was a Czech painter, draughtsperson and illustrator, and one of the most singular and radical figures of European Surrealism. Adopting the gender-neutral pseudonym Toyen in the early 1920s, the artist rejected conventional feminine identity and moved freely between masculine and feminine presentation, both in life and in art. Together with lifelong collaborator Jindřich Štyrský, Toyen co-founded the Czech Surrealist Group in 1934 and later became an important member of André Breton’s Paris circle after settling permanently in France in 1947. While celebrated for haunting, dreamlike paintings, Toyen also produced a remarkable body of explicit erotic work.
