He won two Academy Awards (Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design) for his work on the 1952 film Moulin Rouge. He was born and raised in Budapest, during the interwar years he lived in Paris and when many artists fled Europe during the Second War Vèrtes fled to New York. He continued to return to France however when the war was over.There is not much published about this private life, it is assumed he knew the Paris underworld well being a frequent visitor to several brothels.
