Marcel Vèrtes was a French costume designer and illustrator of Hungarian-Jewish origins. He won two Academy Awards (Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design) for his work on the 1952 film Moulin Rouge.

He was born and raised in Budapest, during the interwar years he lived in Paris and when many artists fled Europe during the Second War Vèrtes fled to New York. He continued to return to France however when the war was over.
There is not much published about this private life, it is assumed he knew the Paris underworld well being a frequent visitor to several brothels. From 1933 till 1961 he had a passionate relationship with Gillian Hammond, an English woman living in Paris while still being married to his wife Dora. Who, according to Marcel 'saw everything but never said anything that could hurt me'.

Vertès is also responsible for the original murals in the Café Carlyle in the Carlyle Hotel in New York City, New York and for those in the Peacock Alley in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
