A central figure of the Aesthetic movement alongside Oscar Wilde and James McNeill Whistler, he made a lasting impact on the development of Art Nouveau and poster design, despite the brevity of his career. Beardsley remains the most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era. His dark, perverse imagery and highly stylised eroticism defined much of his later work.
