Leo Fontan

Léo Fontan was a versatile French painter, illustrator, and decorative artist whose elegant Art Deco style brought him recognition in mainstream circles, while under the pseudonym Fontana he created some of the most refined and sought-after vintage BDSM and spanking illustrations of the 1930s.
Born on 23 September 1884 in Donchery (Ardennes), France, Fontan studied at the art academy in Tours before continuing his training in Paris under prominent masters such as Luc-Olivier Merson, Léon Bonnat, and Fernand Cormon. He established himself in Paris as a painter of portraits, genre scenes, interiors, and decorative works. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français (of which he was a member) and the Salon des Humoristes. In 1936 he received the Bonnat Former Students’ Prize and a Silver Medal, and was later appointed Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. He also contributed illustrations to sophisticated magazines like La Vie Parisienne and Éros.
Parallel to his public career, Fontan produced highly detailed and elegant erotic illustrations under the name Fontana. His spanking and BDSM works are characterized by graceful lines, sensual poses, glossy skin and lingerie textures, expressive faces, and a sophisticated balance between playful eroticism and strict discipline. His scenes often feature strict governesses, boarding-school punishments, maids, and dominant women in elegant interiors, typical of French underground flagellation erotica from the interwar period.

Fontan died on 26 June 1965 in Annecy, France.
