Fredi Trilogy

~ First published in 1929

The Fredi Trilogy is a rare and provocative series of three semi-autobiographical novels that trace the awakening of same-sex desire in a repressive society. Published by the Parisian house Librairie Artistique( known for its scandalous "kitsch novels") the books were disguised as a "study in sexual inversion" to navigate censorship.
For collectors of vintage erotica, the true treasure lies in the exquisite in-text engravings and etchings by Gaston Smit. His precise Art Deco line work infuses the narratives with youthful sensuality, subtle shadows, and elegant decoration, making individual plates highly desirable as standalone prints.

  • Fredi à l’École: Le Roman d’un Inverti (1929)
The story begins at a boarding school, where young Fredi experiences his first attractions to fellow boys. Through shy glances, dormitory whispers, and fleeting forbidden touches, the narrative challenges the strict norms of provincial France. Smit's illustrations brilliantly capture this shift from innocence to desire: slender youths in uniforms, suggestive shadows, and crisp etchings that charge everyday scenes with erotic tension.
  • Fredi en Ménage (1930)
Now a university student, Fredi moves beyond conventional relationships with women to explore deeper bonds with men. Everyday domestic settings—modest apartments—become arenas for quiet rebellion and intimacy. Smit heightens the visual closeness with entwined silhouettes, lingering gazes, and bedside moments that pulse with the era's underground taboo energy, offering a more introspective tone.
  • Fredi s’Amuse (1930)
In the concluding volume, Fredi fully embraces his desires in a committed male partnership, celebrating playful and unashamed domestic joy amid societal judgment. Smit's etchings peak here: flowing, decorative lines depict leisure, laughter, and lust in pure Art Deco elegance—the most liberated and visually rich installment.

This trilogy stands as a poignant document of early 20th-century queer experience, blending semi-autobiographical confession with veiled eroticism. Themes of emerging desire, forbidden intimacy, and eventual liberation are elevated by Gaston Smit's sophisticated illustrations, bridging fine art and underground sensuality.
