~ 1901 – 1959
Nicolas Sternberg was a highly original and prolific Hungarian-born artist and illustrator whose career flourished in the vibrant artistic scene of interwar Paris. Born in 1901 in Nagyvárad (now Oradea, Romania, then part of Hungary), Sternberg showed early talent by contributing illustrations to Hungarian newspapers as a teenager. He later studied art in Budapest and Munich before settling permanently in Paris in 1921.
Working across ink, watercolor, charcoal, and engraving techniques, Sternberg became known for his elegant portraits of women, circus performers, expressive nudes, and evocative erotic illustrations. His style blended influences from Expressionism with the sophisticated, hard-to-define sensibility of the École de Paris artists. Critics praised his originality—most notably André Warnod, who wrote an extensive and enthusiastic review of Sternberg’s 1930 exhibition at the prestigious Georges Petit Galerie in the magazine l’Art et les Artistes.
Sternberg’s most sought-after works today are his book illustrations from the 1920s and 1930s, particularly those with sensual and erotic themes. Highlights include:
- His first major commission: illustrations for a luxury edition of Edmond Haraucourt’s La Légende des Sexes (1923)
- Pierre Louÿs’ libertine classic Les Aventures du Roi Pausole (1930)
- The lesbian-themed series Sapphiques (1930)
- Other notable projects such as Trois orfèvres à la Saint-Éloi and Deshabille (Undressing)
He also contributed to mainstream French magazines like Elle, showing his versatility beyond purely erotic subject matter.
Despite his productivity, relatively little is known about Sternberg’s personal life. As a Jewish artist in occupied Paris, he survived the German occupation in hiding with false papers (a 1940 aerial bombardment tragically killed several family members). He continued creating until his death around 1959–1960.
I have deliberately chosen not to share the complete book illustrations from Nicolas Sternberg’s works. Instead, I carefully extract and present only those individual artworks that are directly related to BDSM themes, such as bondage, femdom, strapon play, power dynamics, sensual dominance and dark art.
This focused selection highlights the pieces that best align with my site’s passion for vintage erotic art exploring these specific elements, while still respecting the broader artistic context of his oeuvre.
