Gaston de Sainte-Croix
~ 1904 - 1977
Gaston de Sainte-Croix was a prolific French illustrator and artist whose versatile style bridged the worlds of erotica, science fiction, and classic literature, leaving an indelible mark on mid-20th-century visual storytelling.
Sainte‑Croix first gained attention for his vivid, sensual drawings in period erotic classics such as Le Journal d’une Femme de Chambre and Les Égarements de Julie. In these works he combined meticulous detail with bold colour, turning historical narratives into emotionally charged, intimate scenes. This skill made him a sought‑after artist for narrative‑driven, adult‑oriented illustration.
During the post‑war boom of French science‑fiction, Sainte‑Croix became a leading visual voice. His striking illustrations appeared in landmark titles such as À quoi songent les Psyborgs ? Les Conquistadors d’Andromède, Azraëc de Virgo, and Des Hommes, des Hommes… et Encore des Hommes.
His finely rendered pencil work and futuristic vistas featured in portfolios like Nous Deuxand the “Clayton’s College” series helped define the golden age of the bande dessinée and speculative fiction, marrying otherworldly settings with human drama.
He occasionally worked under aliases such as Xavier Saint‑Justh (notably for the erotic comic Bambi) and Georges Neczpal, adding layers of mystery to his already enigmatic career. Although concrete biographical details remain scarce, a common trait among many mid‑century illustrators, his body of work endures in vintage comic and erotic‑art collections.
