La flagelación erótica
~ Published in 1932
La flagelación erótica (1932) is one of the rarer Spanish contributions to early 20th-century erotic flagellation literature. Published by Carlos Ameller in Barcelona, the book presents itself as a compilation with notes and glosses by “Dr. Antonio San de Velilla”. Whether this name is a pseudonym (possibly linked to Velilla de San Antonio) remains unclear. The work heavily draws on existing sadomasochistic classics and bibliography, wrapped in a pseudo-scientific/medical guise.
The book features two albums with original spanking illustrations by several artists.
The Illustrators
- Album 1 anonymous artists, J.R and Pierre Noël (Leon Pierre). The latter is notable because some of the same illustrations were also used in the French edition Mrs. Goodwhip et son esclave (1932), an example of international plate sharing common in that era.
- Album 2, art by Zurriago, an obscure artist about whom very little is known. Some sources speculate he may have contributed to other rare Spanish or French titles as well.
The illustrations combine typical 1930s spanking iconography with a certain elegance and variety in settings (schoolrooms, domestic scenes, etc.).
Historical Context
In the 1920s–1930s, Spain (like France) saw a surge in flagellation erotica, often disguised as “medical”, “educational”, or “psychological” studies. This title fits perfectly within that tradition, alongside French authors such as Aimé van Rod and Jean de Villiot.
