René Lelong
~ 1871 - 1933
René Lelong (c. 1871–1933) taught at the Académie Julian, exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, and painted sunlit élégantes for the covers of Femina and L’Illustration. His posters promised perfume and promenades; his brush traced parasols and parasail skirts with the soft precision of a society portraitist.
In 1899, under the discreet imprint of Charles Carrington, Lelong slipped into a locked studio and illustrated Étude sur la flagellation à travers le monde: a “medical and historical” treatise that doubled as a velvet-lined cabinet of curiosities. Ten delicate plates, signed R. Lelong, depict schoolroom canings, prison floggings, and boudoir disciplines rendered with the same refined line he used for seaside idylls.
The book vanished into private libraries. Lelong returned to daylight, never to stray again.
