Feodor Rojankovsky

Feodor Stepanovich Rojankovsky, better known as Rojan (1891–1970), was a Russian émigré illustrator who excelled in two seemingly opposite worlds: the gentle, colorful illustrations for children’s books and the sensual, often explicitly erotic art for adults.

Born on December 24, 1891, in Mitava (present-day Jelgava, Latvia) in the Russian Empire, Rojankovsky developed a passion for drawing from an early age, particularly animals and nature. After studying at the Moscow Art Academy and serving in World War I, he emigrated via Estonia and France to the United States. In the US, he gained international fame with his children’s book illustrations, most notably the Caldecott Medal-winning Frog Went A-Courtin' (1956).

Parallel to his mainstream success, Rojan remained a highly productive and daring erotic artist. Under the name Rojan, he created an extensive body of sensual illustrations between the 1920s and 1950s, often featuring a playful, subtle, or overtly fetishistic tone. His erotic work is characterized by elegant lines, warm and almost impressionistic coloring, and a refined observation of the human body and desire.

A significant portion of Rojan’s erotic art contains clear BDSM and fetish elements. These include Golden Shower (urophilia) scenes, which form a recurring and prominent theme throughout his oeuvre, as well as subtle to explicit spanking and dominance scenes, femdom dynamics, strapon play, and enema themes. His work also explores general BDSM elements such as bondage, power exchange, and disciplinary situations, all of which are often rendered in an elegant and almost poetic manner.

His erotic work strikes a balance between subtle sensuality and open fetishism, with a characteristic lightness and humor typical of certain French and Russian émigré artists of that era. This makes him a fascinating figure: a respected Caldecott Medal winner by day, and a master of vintage fetish art in his more private creations.
