Suzanne Ballivet

Suzanne Ballivet was born in Paris, only daughter of Jules and Laurentine Ballivet. Her father was a photographer in Montpellier, in the south of France. She did her secondary studies in Montpellier and was a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montpellier. In 1925 she married Camille Descossy and in 1927 she moved to Paris where she did Fashion Design and where she exhibited at the International Colonial Exhibition. In 1931, she returned to Montpellier where she made theatrical sets and costumes in Jean Catel's troupe as well as anatomy drawings. After her divorce in 1941, she went back to Paris with Albert Dubout and exhibited her drawings at Humor 41. In 1942, she was in Nice where she participated in the creation of cartoons with Dubout. Her first illustrations for art editions began in 1943. In 1946, she returned to Paris where she met Colette, Sacha Guitry, Marcel Pagnol and also the designers Bellus, Ben, Peynet, with whom she collaborated on several magazines. humor1. She remarried with the cartoonist, poster artist and illustrator Albert Dubout.

During the last ten years of her life, suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, she retired to Saint-Aunès, stopped drawing and painting and devoted her time to reading. There is one album she illustrated that stands out (for this site), her art for the book Venus aux Fourrure, published in 1954.
